Chery, a prominent player in the global automotive sector, is set to launch a new ultra-fast charging battery division called the 'Kunpeng Battery Brand,' designed to deliver an impressive range of up to 1,200 kilometers for electric vehicles.
The introduction of the Kunpeng solid-state battery brand was revealed at the 2024 Chery Global Innovation Conference held in Wuhu, Anhui Province. With this advancement in energy technology, Chery aims to achieve an energy density of 400 Wh/kg by the end of this year, with plans to increase it to 600 Wh/kg by 2025.
The Kunpeng lineup will feature three primary types of products: square lithium iron phosphate, square ternary, and large cylindrical ternary batteries. Each variant is equipped with 6C ultra-fast charging capabilities, allowing them to provide up to 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes. Additionally, these ultra-fast charging batteries are designed to operate effectively in a temperature range from -40°C to 65°C.
The square lithium iron phosphate batteries offer an energy density of 120-160 Wh/kg and support electric vehicles with a range of 200-600 kilometers. The square ternary batteries feature an energy density of 140-200 Wh/kg, suitable for vehicles with ranges between 600-800 kilometers. The large cylindrical batteries are engineered to support electric vehicles with ranges of 700-1,200 kilometers. Furthermore, these ultra-fast charging products can also be used in plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and range extenders (EREVs), offering varying ranges. Chery asserts that the Kunpeng series can endure over 3,000 charging cycles, extending battery life by 20% beyond industry norms.
The company plans to initiate pilot testing with the first vehicle application in 2026, with mass production of the Kunpeng Battery brand expected to commence in 2027. In the meantime, Chery anticipates integrating Kunpeng products into its vehicle lineup soon.
Chery recently reported selling 44,851 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in June 2024, with chairman Yin Tongyue expressing a goal of reaching 80,000 NEV sales this month and 100,000 by year-end.
During the Global Innovation Conference, Chery also announced the launch of the Kaiyang Lab, which aims to foster research in cutting-edge automotive technologies. Additionally, the company unveiled its AI-driven Lion Smart Cockpit solution, designed to enhance ergonomics and aesthetics while ensuring a pleasurable driving experience for electric vehicle users.
