Engenie, the UK's fast-charging network, has announced plans to double the number of electric car charging stations in the UK by 2024. More than 2,000 quick car charging stations will be funded by a £35m investment from Cube Infrastructure Fund II.
In practice, this means Engenie will have to install more than 2,000 quick charging stations over the next five years. Locations include primary access to public sites, such as supermarkets and retail parks. Ian Johnston, Engenie's chief executive, explains the company's current decision to focus on expanding its network: "the electric car market is going mainstream. "Private companies are seizing opportunities to invest in electric cars, and nearly 75 percent of car buyers are considering electric cars as their next vehicle."
Once completed, the network is expected to service about 5 million electric cars a year and eliminate up to 25 tons of nitrogen oxides. The expansion was funded by the Cube Infrastructure Fund. According to bloomberg, "the imf seeks to invest in public-private partnerships in transportation, telecommunications, energy, utilities, the environment, electricity from solar and wind power, electricity distribution, accommodation, and other utilities," a major real estate investment fund.
Cube's chief executive Renaud DE Matharel sees a lot of potential electrified transport: "with transport making up about 40 per cent of total energy consumption in the UK and air pollution becoming a rapidly growing concern, we see new mobility solutions as a key element in achieving the energy transition goals and implementing climate change policies".
Engenie has been working to increase the UK's charging infrastructure. One recent initiative is a partnership with Marston's inn and Taverns, a British pub operator, to install 400 quick-charging stations with a capacity of 50kw in their pubs.
