CATL has launched the Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery, tailored for extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to support high-capacity, rapid charging. This new battery technology offers over 280 kilometers of range with just a 10-minute charge, addressing the challenges of limited range, slow charging speeds, and reduced performance in low temperatures. Several brands, including Li Auto, Avatr, Deepal, Changan Nevo, and Neta, have already integrated this technology, and by 2025, it will be available in 30 additional hybrid models.
To achieve this, CATL has combined sodium-ion and lithium-ion cells in a strategic blend using its AB battery system integration technology. This arrangement not only improves range but also enhances low-temperature performance by 5%. The sodium-ion component serves as a state-of-charge (SOC) reference, helping to precisely calibrate the lithium-ion battery's SOC.
Key design features of the Freevoy include a modified cathode with surface technology and a high-voltage electrolyte, forming a nano protective layer that minimizes side reactions. To boost ion transport, CATL applied a fast ion conductor coating on the cathode and utilized second-generation fast-charging graphite with advanced nano-coating on the anode. Additionally, the cathode material includes high-activity particles to improve energy flow.
The battery’s performance is further optimized by an advanced battery management system (BMS) with intelligent algorithms, enhancing SOC accuracy by 40% and increasing the use of pure electric power by over 10%. A multi-level power predictive model improves the hybrid vehicles' power output by 20%. The Freevoy is also capable of operating in extreme temperatures, discharging down to -40°C and charging at -30°C, thanks to its precise BMS, which compensates for performance mismatches between lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells in extreme conditions.
With the Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery, CATL is set to make a significant impact on battery innovation for EREVs and PHEVs, particularly through its new 4C ultra-fast charging capability.
