Box Energi plans to build a fast charging network for electric cars in the UK by 2025, with 2,500 charging points, with at least 100 expected to be operational by January 2020.
The store network will run under the name of the drive Energi. A contract to supply charging stations has also been awarded: Australian supplier Tritium will supply at least 2,500 Veefil DC chargers with a charging capacity of 50kw. In addition, tritium will provide maintenance and service for the charger.
James Moat, the chief executive of Drive Energi, says Tritium was chosen because it is "reliable, robust and reliable". "These chargers are not only the fastest and most technologically advanced of their kind, but they are also extremely easy to use and the smallest footprint makes them easy to deploy -- especially in our cities and high-density areas where space is increasingly limited."
According to a press release, two 50kW chargers will be installed at each location. When completed in 2025, Drive Energi will be the world's largest dc rapid charging network. By targeting the density of fast chargers, the company hopes to address the UK's ev range anxiety.
However, not all stations are open to the public. Drive Energi aims for an unspecified mix of public and private charging stations. These private charging stations will be installed in the company and help electric fleets.
Drive Energi is not the only fast charging network in the UK. Ionity's first charging station will be able to charge up to 350 kilowatts, while Fastned's is now offering up to 175 kilowatts. BP's Chargemaster plans to build up to 400 150-kilowatt high-performance PC chargers, mainly for use at BP Group gas stations. The companies do not provide a target number of charging stations from Drive Energi, but in some cases they do offer more charging capacity.
